It was wet and windy evening for the late start at Hampton - so I need to praise the commitment of all the players and parents who made the effort to attend, and with special thanks to Noah and Yann Belling, who's Mum, Anja, made a great effort to bring them straight over from Sutton after their away school rugby games. Both Noah and Yann put in a hard shift and, as we were only the bare 11, with me as kicking back, both had to play the full 70 minutes.
The defence all played well against a trick set of Hampton youngsters a few of whom showed high technical ability. Some of them had been taught how to do complex drag manoeuvres in tight positions, but we held our positions well to cancel out the threat on most occasions.
Going forwards and especially in the second half, our early balls into space (kept away from their outfield adult) proved to be the difference. Josh Appleby was effective with his running off the ball and quick distribution to set up the chances. Jack Batty was clinical for his chances and for this we agreed that he should be the MVP, although Noah belling came a very close 2nd.
Finally, I thank Hampton being very gracious in defeat and welcoming and genial as hosts on the pitch and in the clubhouse.
