Edgbaston victorious after devastating 5 minute spell

In the opening game of the 2nd XI West Midlands Premier League, Bournville Men's 2's took on local rivals Edgbaston Hockey Club.

With a reformed squad from the previous season and a host of new faces making their return and debuts for the club, it was always going to be a tough ask for a new Bournville Squad which, notably included the fresh face of Jonny Borer, who had transferred from Edgbaston to Bournville over the summer.

A strong Edgbaston side took an early lead inside the first ten minutes with a well worked move through the centre of the park. Bournville responded well, slickly moving the ball about quickly and putting pressure on the Edgbaston defence.

Despite the Bournville pressure, Edgbaston nearly scored a swift second and if it hadn't been for the lightening reactions of Jonny Haines on the goal line the game could have been already beyond reach. A disallowed goal for Nick Deacon whose shot from a Short Corner was deemed to be above the backboard inspired the team to redouble their efforts.

Bournville's hard work was rewarded in the 25th minute with good work from the two Elliot's in the team. New signing Elliot Bennett's Drag Flick was picked off the line by the Edgbaston defence and quick reactions from Elliot Southerton gave Bournville a well deserved equaliser.

The score remained the same into half time.

After the break, Edgbaston came charging out of the blocks putting the Bournville defence under serious pressure. Some fine saves from Adam Parsons and solid defending from Chris Dugmore, largely kept the Edgbaston Forwards at bay.

Some slick counter attacking moves saw Bournville waste some golden opportunities to swing the game in their favour but poor passing and losing the ball in key areas of the pitch proved to be Bournville's downfall. A dubious second Edgbaston goal was the start of a devastating 5 minute spell which saw Edgbaston score 3 quick goals to put the game to bed late on.

A final scoreline of 4-1 flattered the opposition but with a new team thrown together a lot of positives can be taken including showing that the team has the ability to compete at this level. Hard work over the next two weeks will prepare the team for the next game against Warwick and an opportunity to get some points on the board.

Man of the match went to Chris Dugmore who made some exceptional tackles.

Dick of the day went to Captain Elliot Southerton who, having believed he managed to leave his shorts at home, sent his better half home to find them only to realise he had been wearing them the entire time.
