New Junior Players Welcome
Bournville HC has a flourishing Juniors section. We have training every Tuesday evening (from 6:30 - 7:30pm) and training/trounaements every Sunday morning (from 10:30 -11:30am) from September to March
We have three current international coaches on our staff. Hywel Jones (full Welsh International), Eddie Way (GB U21) and Adrian Bailey (GB O55). So you can be guaranteed quality coaching at the highest possible standard.
We are always looking to welcome new players. Do you play at school and want to play more? Perhaps you've never played before but want to make new friends and try a new sport? Contact Sophia (07836 230229) for more details or feel free to turn up at a training session.
11-a-side matches are played on a friendly basis every Saturday against other clubs in Birmingham/Warwickshire. The set up includes 2 experienced adult players that will support the juniors on the pitch whilst also teaching them some important skills and helping them to become good effective team players.
For the older juniors aged 14-16, we encourage the transition into Adult Hockey, supported by a mentoring system with the club's top players. Both the men's and ladies teams are ready to welcome youngsters ready to start playing adult hockey.
Any child MUST wear shin pads and suitable footwear for sport played on an astroturf. Gum shields are strongly advised, but we can provide sticks if necessary. No previous playing experience is necessary.
If you are interested in playing, please call Sophia (07836 230229) or emails email@example.com
Season Report 2017-18
The Badgers had an excellent season in 2017-18, considering there was a large exodus of older players from the previous season. We were worried that the remaining team, under the experience of Matthew Whitehouse as Captain, would struggle but our doubts were blown away by a very positive season, a strong influx of players and great improvements in the standard of play by those who remained. Bournville remained in the Central Conference with 9 teams in the league. The standard continues to improve with Edgbaston, Olton and particularly Atherstone Adders (the only team to do the double on us) having very strong teams. We also had friendlies with Harborne ladies (including boys as well as Adult men) and Nuneaton. Bournville won 8, drew 3 and lost 6 games through the season, which is yet to finish, as we have extra fixtures home and away against Worcester organised in the next few weeks to look forward to.
Tuesday night training forms the foundation of the Badgers success and was very well attended right from the start, for which I must thank Adrian and Helen Bailey for their great commitment to the coaching every Tuesday night and to Sandra Bailey for continuing to take the register and collecting the money. Apart from the older group of 11 years and up who make up the Badgers Team, there is also a strong group of U11’s whom I watched overwhelm Edgbaston on a Sunday morning towards in March. Numbers participating at training were definitely up on last season and we also have to thank Peter Whitehouse, Peter Bailey and Jean Pajayon who helped coach small groups to allow that to happen. We hope that next season a good number of these new and younger players and others we don’t know about yet who will come to the July – Aug Back-to-Hockey sessions.
Can I thank all the parents, especially to Steve Washbourne for their support whenever they could and also to the various adults who occasionally helped on the pitch. Also can I thank all the umpires who offered their services and umpired in the right caring spirit that young players need.
There may be a couple of players who should now take the big step up to the Adults teams. It is important that they get the right help and support from the captains and team-mates to keep up their interest in the game. Playing in the adult league teams can be quite a challenge for them and suggest that they are allocated an experienced mentor to help them along the way next season.
Congratulations to our loyal captain Matthew Whitehouse who played with great responsibility in every game, Joe Evans and William McDowell (voted by their peers as Badger of the season and Young Badger of the Season respectively) and Ethan Couperthwaite (most improved player).
